The Wild Coast is true to its name – it is a stretch of spectacular wilderness coastline in the Eastern Cape Province between the Great Kei River to the south and the Mtamvuna River to the north.

It is characterised by cliffs, quiet bays and secluded beaches. Most of the coastline is largely inaccessible unless you are willing to explore by mountain bike or on foot. Port St Johns is the only town of note on the Wild Coast, situated spectacularly on the Umzimvubu River in a gorge amidst the mountains of Thesiger and Sullivan, either side of the river. The Cape Hermes Lighthouse is worth a visit; it is built in the shape of an octagon from the granite on which it stands.
